On June 18, 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a devastating decision in the United States v. Skrmetti. Their ruling allows Tennessee to enforce its ban on essential gender-affirming care for young people.
What Do We Know?
The Skrmetti decision isn’t just an attack on trans youth in Tennessee. It’s a chilling signal to states across the U.S. that these bans can stand. Particularly in the 24 states that have already passed restrictions or bans on care for trans youth.
- Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for young people will remain in place.
- This decision could make it easier for other states to ban access to gender-affirming care.
- The Skrmetti ruling undermines bodily autonomy and harms the health and well-being of young people.
While the Supreme Court’s decision is based on the specific facts surrounding the Tennessee law, and does not currently extend to other cases about access to gender-affirming care or discrimination based on transgender status, this decision could allow other states to ban access to gender-affirming care for young people.
What Can We Do?
Keep organizing, keep loving on each other, keep transitioning, and keep living in the infinity of our genders.
The Skrmetti ruling highlights another way the state is aiming to control our bodily autonomy. But even in the shadow of this horrific decision, we must stay strong. Skrmetti is a reminder that the courts and the state were never built for us. Our rights have always been won through our collective power and relentless organizing.
Once more, it’s time to protest, raise money, donate, support gender justice, support Reproductive Justice, support one another, fight discrimination, and ORGANIZE. We’ve got work to do.
To trans youth everywhere: We have your backs. We love you. We’re in this fight together.
