The Supreme Court Will Not Save Us: SCOTUS Protects Mifepristone, For Now.
May 14, 2026
May 14, 2026: Today, the Supreme Court decided to allow mifepristone to remain available through the mail or from a pharmacy while Louisiana v. FDA plays out. In response to this ruling, which reaffirms that mifepristone is safe and effective, National Network of Abortion Funds Interim Executive Director Poonam Dreyfus-Pai released the following statement:
“We can briefly sit in the relief of knowing that today no further action was taken to restrict abortion access, but we also know that this is not a Court that cares about the American people or our rights. This is the same group of Justices who have let us down time and time again. They overturned Roe v. Wade, they are poised to attack IVF and take away your birth control, and just last week they eviscerated the Voting Rights Act. Anti-abortion extremists are emboldened by their allies on the Court. They will not stop until they have banned mifepristone, criminalized abortion, and rigged the system to harm the most marginalized and under-resourced in every possible way. More challenging days are ahead.
“No matter the outcome of today, or the threats of tomorrow, abortion funds will rise to the moment. On good days and hard days, abortion funds show up to support people as they navigate legal, political, cultural, and logistical barriers to abortion. Do not cheer for the Supreme Court. We must not let our guard down and celebrate the preservation of our most fundamental rights—we must remain vigilant in demanding more. Instead, let this moment serve as a reminder of the safety of mifepristone and the importance of abortion funds.”
