New national data: Demand for abortion support has doubled since Dobbs. National Network of Abortion Funds survey shows soaring demand, rising costs, and widening gaps in abortion access.

A new nationwide survey from The National Network of Abortion Funds (NNAF) reveals that requests for abortion support have doubled since the fall of Roe—while the cost of supporting people accessing abortions has surged alongside it.

The findings come from NNAF’s 2025 Membership Enrollment Survey (MES), the largest survey of abortion funds ever conducted, with responses from 97 abortion funds nationwide.

The data paints a stark picture of abortion access in the post-Dobbs era: more people are being forced to travel farther, delay care longer, and rely on financial and logistical support just to get an abortion.

Abortion funds deserve deep investment so they can sustainably and holistically support abortion seekers.”

Three people sit on the floor around a table completing a puzzle. One person discusses how a local abortion fund helped when they had an abortion.

“Abortion funds are doing everything they can to meet the moment,” says Poonam Dreyfus-Pai, Interim Executive Director at the National Network of Abortion Funds.“The need is growing even faster than available resources, and the gap continues to widen. People have to work even harder and travel further to get the abortions they want and need, if they can at all. Abortion funds deserve deep investment so they can sustainably and holistically support abortion seekers.”

The 2025 MES makes the trend clear: abortion funds are scaling up—but the high costs and support needs continue to make abortion access out of reach for many.

Key Findings from the 2025 MES:

  • The number of callers supported has doubled since Dobbs, rising from 82,000 in 2022 to 158,000 in 2025.
  • Abortion funding requests have also doubled, from around 117k in 2022 to around 234k requests received in 2025—reflecting sustained and increasing need nationwide.
  • The average amount spent per abortion more than doubled, from $188 in 2022 to around $396 in 2025 per abortion seeker supported. That is because the costs associated with each abortion, including traveling across state lines, increased significantly.
  • Since 2024 alone, abortion funding costs increased by 30% and practical support (such as gas money, hotel stays, childcare, and more) rose by 13%
  • More than one-third of abortion funds reported increased out-of-state travel among callers, driving up both medical and logistical costs.
  • Nearly a third of abortion funds said they had to pause their hotlines earlier due to funding shortages, staffing burnout, legal barriers, security concerns, and political attacks.

The report underscores a worrying national crisis: as abortion bans and restrictions continue to worsen, abortion funds remain a critical lifeline—but they cannot meet this level of need alone. Increased funding, policy change, and long-term investment in abortion access are essential to closing the gap.
