Welcome to Collective Care + You, part five of Power in Our Hands. In this final edition from our learning series on self-managed abortion, we talk about the limitations of Roe v. Wade and discuss our shared legacy of reclaiming bodily autonomy and resisting criminalization.

Roe Was Never Enough.

Fifty-three years ago, the Supreme Court established a constitutional right to abortion with Roe v. Wade. But this anniversary, we want to make clear that the protections set by this case were never enough (even before Dobbs overturned them).

In the history of self-managed abortion (SMA), community members have long reclaimed bodily autonomy and resisted criminalization to care for the folks they love. Abortion funds work every day to create a future in which abortions are affordable, available, and identity-affirming for everyone who wants them in whatever methods they choose.

Together, we’ll manifest what community care looks like in this moment.

Autonomy is Non-Negotiable.

Overturning Roe undermined the bodily autonomy of millions. Although Roe’s protections gave some folks with more legal access to abortion, many communities still endured countless barriers to getting abortions, with disproportionate harms on people of color.

Through decades of chipping away at abortion access, anti-abortion activists and legislators have deliberately caused a healthcare crisis. And they are now criminalizing people who manage their own abortions as a result of reduced access.

We must challenge this act of state violence. We must work together to dismantle the systems that are harming us and those we love. We must build pockets of liberation together. We must keep caring for each other and support our neighbors and loved ones to get the abortions they want or need.

How will you connect with others to create change?

A page from Power in Our Hearts, NNAF's zine about self-managed abortion. It discusses the unequal policing of people of color who manage their own abortions.

We Got Us. No Matter Where.

As Power in Our Hands ends, reflect on the knowledge you’ve gained from this learning series. Join us in carrying forward the legacy of collective care networks and building access to self-managed abortion. Commit to combat stigma, resist criminalization, and support folks who manage their own abortions. We know you’re ready.
