Today, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the constitutional protections in Roe v. Wade. The National Network of Abortion Funds knows it will be harder than ever before for people to get an abortion.
Our hearts are on fire.
Although we’ve been anticipating this outcome, the reality of this final decision hurts. Anti-abortion lawmakers and extremists worked insidiously to chip away at abortion access for decades. And now that the U.S. Supreme Court has overturned the constitutional protections set in Roe v. Wade, we know it will be harder than ever before for people to get an abortion. Today’s decision is the result of a thoroughly entrenched anti-abortion movement with deep pockets that we’ve pushed against at every corner.
This decision has rippling effects that are already being felt across the country. Right now, people living in and traveling to states where abortion is more accessible are already experiencing a shortage of providers and clinics. As the access landscape constricts further, the strain on our healthcare system will be catastrophic. While we prepare ourselves for roughly half of the states to limit or ban abortion outright—either immediately or very soon—it’s important to remember: Abortion is still available in the U.S., and abortion funds are still here for us. Find information about clinics and their status based on location: Visit INeedAnA.com.
We don’t have the option of being shocked into inaction by the cruelty of this decision. This moment is about abortion, and it’s about so much more—the systems of white supremacy and economic oppression are working exactly as they are meant to, using our laws and institutions to control our bodies, families, and futures. We’ve seen time and time again that abortion bans and restrictions harm Black communities, Indigenous communities, people of color, and people experiencing financial hardship the most. No one, in any state or region, is expendable. And no one should have their healthcare blocked or withheld. As the need for abortion care, financial support, and practical assistance grows across the country, abortion funds will continue to be there for us, holding the line, leading with the values and expertise needed as we navigate this new landscape together.
Build power with collective action.
Let the power of this network spark hope and light a flame of collective action.
Right now, funds are working around the clock to strengthen their contingency plans for providing assistance as access shrinks across the country. This network is powerful, and funds are connected in solidarity across regions where access is restricted and those where abortion is protected. We are resilient because we have strong values guiding a shared vision: Our collective work is to build a world where all people have the power and resources to care for and affirm their bodies, identities, and health for themselves and their families—in all areas of their lives, whenever they need it. For years, anti-abortion extremists have tried to divide us across state boundaries to diminish our strength, but we won’t be fractured or silenced by the threat of criminalization from adversaries who are intimidated by our vision for the future we deserve.
Navigating this growing crisis will take all of our collective power. Abortion funds need our support now, more than ever before. You trust people who seek abortions. It’s time to make clear our trust in the abortion funds that make it possible. Continue to donate, lift up their work, and share their calls to action with your family and friends. With your help, we can make sure that funds have the necessary resources to continue helping callers get the abortions they need.
