Extra Financial Assistance – National Network of Abortion Funds

Can I Get a Discount at My Clinic?

Some clinics offer discounts to people who can’t pay for their abortions. Sometimes these discounts come from a clinic’s internal abortion fund. Other times, the discounts are based on income. If you need to make an appointment with a clinic, find one with I Need an A. Learn about the discounts your clinic offers by checking their website or calling.

If the discount is based on income, the process can get complicated. But don’t worry. We’ll guide you through it.

If the clinic’s discounts are based on income, check the Federal Poverty Guidelines with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

You will only qualify for this discount if your income is within the limit.

If Medicaid covers abortion in your state, income-based discounts from the clinic are unavailable.

But if you live in a state where Medicaid covers abortion, you might be able to get an abortion for free through government insurance.

Visit Abortion & Medicaid to learn more about applying and eligibility.

If your appointment is with Planned Parenthood, ask about the Justice Fund:

The Justice Fund is a Planned Parenthood program that ensures all people, regardless of income or residence, can access safe, legal abortion services.

After you’ve made an appointment, tell Planned Parenthood you need extra financial support to pay for your abortion, and they will help you apply.

Other clinics may offer discounts:

After you’ve made an appointment at a clinic, call them or check their website to learn about the discounts offered and eligibility requirements.

No Clinic Discounts? Call your abortion fund and NAF.

If your clinic doesn’t offer discounts, and Medicaid doesn’t cover abortion in your state, you can still get help.

First, reach out to your local abortion fund, which may be able to cover some of the costs, including the procedure, travel, and lodging.

Then, call or chat with the National Abortion Federation Hotline (NAF Hotline) and learn if you’re eligible for a discount. You can reach this Hotline by phone at 1-800-772-9100 or connect with a Hotline worker over chat on their Hotline Homepage here.

The NAF Hotline helps with income-based discounts. Check Federal Poverty Guidelines to see if you qualify.

Make an appointment at a clinic before you call or chat with the NAF Hotline. You need an appointment before applying for a discount, so schedule one even if you aren’t sure how to pay for your abortion. You can always change your appointment. Clinics don’t charge for rescheduling.

Tips for calling the NAF Hotline

Because many people need extra financial support for their abortions, getting through to the NAF Hotline can be hard.

Follow these tips and be patient.

The NAF Hotline is open Monday to Friday, 8 AM – 7 PM ET (5 AM – 4 PM PT) and 8 AM – 4 PM ET (5 AM – 1 PM PT) on weekends.

If you call early in the morning or late at night, you may have a better chance of talking to someone.

The website chat is open Monday to Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM ET (6 AM – 2 PM PT).

The recording on the Hotline will tell you to call back later. Instead, hang up and immediately press redial.

Do this for an hour, and you have a good chance of speaking to someone.

If you have a friend or family member who knows about your situation, ask them to call the NAF Hotline, too.

Get together with friends and coordinate calling on your cell phones.

This organization helps thousands of people just like you. When the phone line is busy, other people are getting the help they need.

Keep calling.
